DeKalb County schools in Atlanta, Georgia, are facing an enrollment crisis. Continuing decline in enrollment has caused the district to establish an advisory board to reallocate buildings in the district for alternative uses. These changes are intended to address under and overcapacity in the district’s schools, improve out of date facilities, strengthen student programs, and make transportation routes more efficient. Following months of research, the Student Assignment Project (SAP) committee has proposed a list of “scenarios” to close, renovate, and repurpose school buildings.

These are the 115 schools the committee is considering in its consolidation efforts. The board highlights the growing number of unoccupied seats and the potential for better distribution of enrollment at these schools as the main reason for the changes.
Because of student needs and population density, the number of elementary schools in the area in greatest, followed by middle schools, then high schools.
The proposal has designations for each of these schools, with some buildings being repurposed for another grade range, some being renovated for future use, and others being reassigned as some other education facilities.
